Steve Butterworth MA; VetMB; CertVR; DSAO; FRCVS;
RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics)
Steve Butterworth graduated from Cambridge Vet school in 1986. Before
establishing Weighbridge Referral Centre Steve worked as a house surgeon,
in general practice and then as a lecturer in surgery at Bristol Vet School for
six years.
During this time he gained Royal College Certificates in Veterinary Radiology
& Small Animal Orthopaedics. He then went on to gain the RCVS diploma in
Small Animal Orthopaedics in 1992 (one of the first six to do so by
examination). This taken together with publication of several peer-reviewed
scientific papers and innumerable presentations at veterinary conferences,
allowed him to become an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal
Surgery (Orthopaedics) in 1995. He has retained this Specialist status ever since and is currently one of only 43 (taken from the RCVS Register, October 2023) to hold this recognised status in the whole of the United Kingdom. In 2019, Steve was elected to the Fellowship of the RCVS for meritorious contribution to clinical practice.
Steve has served on BSAVA Committees, as Chair of the BVOA and as an examiner for the RCVS, Bristol University & for BSAVA. Over more than 30 years he has gained extensive experience in orthopaedic and spinal surgery and has become an internationally recognised speaker in the field.
Outside of work and family (with 4 grown-up children) Steve spends a lot of hillwalking, some time as a volunteer with the Scout Association and also enjoys running/keep fit and trying to play golf.
Abbreviations – What do all those letters mean?
————————————————————————–
(BSAVA) – British Small Animal Veterinary Association
(RCVS) – Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons
(BVOA) – British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association
MA – whilst studying at Cambridge University, Steve took a year out of the Veterinary programme to study Pathology in more depth. This resulted in him gaining a degree in Natural Sciences (Pathology). Since Cambridge do not award science degrees as such, for achieving this degree Steve was awarded a Bachelor of Arts. With continued studying in any field this then matures to a Master of Arts, or MA. VetMB – this is the Veterinary degree awarded by Cambridge University – Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (in Latin!)
CertVR – after graduating Steve spent two years undertaking post-graduate studies leading to him passing the
RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Radiology.
DSAO – For the next two years Steve undertook post-graduate studies leading to him passing the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics and then another two years continuing these studies leading to him passing the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Orthopaedics. This diploma is accepted internationally as one of the highest qualifications in this subject.
FRCVS – Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) shows that a person is licensed to practice Veterinary Surgery in the UK (and some other parts of the world). There are several routes by which a member can be elected to Fellowship (FRCVS) but in Steve’s case it was for meritorious contribution to clinical practice.
RCVS Recognised Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (Orthopaedics) – The RCVS keeps a register of Specialists in a number of fields. Small Animal Surgery is one and Small Animal Orthopaedics is a subdivision of this group. According to the RCVS’s website the status of Recognised Specialist is not easily achieved. To be included on the List, an individual must have achieved a postgraduate qualification at least at Diploma level, and must additionally satisfy the RCVS that they make an active contribution to their specialty, have national and international acclaim and publish widely in their field. Recognised Specialist status is time-bound and the individual must reapply for recognition every 5 years to maintain their name on the List. Hence, amongst the entire UK Veterinary Profession (at this time) they are the only members of the RCVS that are audited by their regulatory body with regard to their current clinical involvement and knowledge about the field in which they practice Veterinary Surgery.
